The Baltics

The Baltics: A Journey Through Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania

The Baltics have captivated me with their rich history, stunning architecture, and incredible opportunities for videography. As I wander through the cobblestone streets of Tallinn, Estonia, I’m transported back in time by the well-preserved medieval buildings that dot the landscape. In Riga, Latvia, the Art Nouveau facades leave me in awe, inspiring me to capture their intricate details on camera. Meanwhile, Vilnius, Lithuania enchants me with its charming Old Town, where each corner offers a new perspective to film.

The unique blend of cultures and stories weaving through this region doesn’t just enrich my travel experience, it provides endless inspiration for my videography, making the Baltics an unforgettable destination for creators and history buffs alike.

Why the Baltics Should Be on Your Travel Radar

Whether you are a solo traveler or a photography enthusiast, the Baltic states offer a rare mix of “Old World” charm and modern digital innovation. Each country has a distinct personality:

  • Estonia: Famous for the medieval walls of Tallinn and its breathtaking islands.
  • Latvia: The cultural heart of the region, boasting the largest collection of Art Nouveau architecture in the world.
  • Lithuania: Home to the sprawling Vilnius Old Town and the mystical Hill of Crosses.

Best Time to Visit the Baltics: Why Summer Wins, in my opinion

I visited the Baltics during the summer of 2024, and based on my firsthand experience, I truly feel that June through August is the best time to visit the region.

The weather was mild and comfortable, usually hovering between 18°C and 24°C, which is perfect for long days of walking. One of the most magical aspects of a Baltic summer is the “White Nights”—the days are wonderfully long, providing plenty of daylight to explore and film without feeling rushed.

A Pro Tip for Baltic Weather

Even though the summer sun is brilliant, the coastal weather can be famously unpredictable. During my time in Tallinn, I learned quickly that a clear blue sky can transform into a sudden afternoon shower in a matter of minutes—often while the sun is still shining! I highly recommend always tucking a small, sturdy umbrella into your day bag. Having one saved my camera gear more than once.

I was also pleasantly surprised by how uncrowded the cities felt. Even in popular spots like Tallinn’s Town Hall Square or Riga’s Blackheads House, I never felt overwhelmed by tourists. Summer made it easy to:

  1. Walk Everywhere: The compact city centers are best explored on foot.
  2. Enjoy Outdoor Cafés: The European café culture is in full bloom during these months.
  3. Capture Better Footage: The golden hour lasts much longer, which is a dream for any videographer.

Traveling Between the Baltic Capitals

One of the best travel hacks I discovered is how easy it is to traverse the region. Since the three capitals are relatively close, you can easily experience the transition of cultures.

  • By Bus: High-quality coach services (like Lux Express) are the most popular way to get from Tallinn to Riga, and then onto Vilnius. The journeys are scenic and affordable.
  • By Car: Driving through the Baltic countryside allows you to stop at hidden gems like the Gauja National Park in Latvia or the Curonian Spit in Lithuania.
