Exploring The Netherlands

A country of windmills, waterways, and wonder

Exploring the Netherlands was an unforgettable experience that brought together charm, culture, and so much unexpected beauty. From the iconic canals of Amsterdam to the storybook village of Volendam, every place I visited felt like stepping into a postcard.

The Windmills of Volendam

“Watching the massive sails of the historic windmills catch the wind was a highlight—perfect for capturing that slow, cinematic movement on film.”

Visiting the historic windmills was a highlight, offering a glimpse into the country’s fascinating past and the ingenuity that shaped its landscape.

I also loved learning how traditional Dutch wooden shoes are made — seeing the craftsmanship behind these iconic clogs made me appreciate the country’s heritage even more.

A touring the Henri Willig cheese factory, established in 1974, added another layer of flavor to my journey (literally!). Tasting the aged Black Garlic Gouda at the Henri Willig factory was a flavor highlight, I even brought a small block home as a souvenir.

I was used to seeing round cheese wheels, but these Black Garlic Gouda blocks at Henri Willig caught my eye immediately. The square shape makes it so much easier to slice—not that it lasted very long once I got it home!”

The variety at Henri Willig is incredible—I highly recommend trying the Black Garlic Gouda!

Travel Tips for Visiting the Netherlands

Best Time to Visit

The Netherlands is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is spring (April–May) when the tulips are in full bloom or early fall (September–October) for mild weather and fewer crowds. Summer is warm and lively, while winter offers cozy holiday charm and festive lights.

How to Get Around

The Netherlands is incredibly easy to explore thanks to its efficient transportation system.

  • Trains: Fast, clean, and reliable — perfect for traveling between cities.
  • Bikes: The Dutch love biking, and renting a bicycle is one of the best ways to experience local life.
  • Ferries: Great for short trips across waterways, especially around Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Quick Tips:

  • The “Bike” Rule: “In the Netherlands, bikes always have the right of way. Stay alert when crossing those lanes!”
  • The “Rain” Rule: “Even on a sunny day, carry a light jacket. The North Sea breeze is no joke!”

Weather Notes

Dutch weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to bring layers, a light jacket, and always an umbrella or raincoat. Even in summer, breezes near the coast and canals can feel cool.

Cultural Etiquette

The Dutch value punctuality, politeness, and direct communication.

  • Saying “hallo” or “dank je wel” goes a long way.
  • Most restaurants don’t rush your meal — you’ll need to ask for the check.
  • Biking is serious business here, so always stay aware of bike lanes!

Money & Transit Tips

  • Cards are widely accepted, but having a little cash is still useful in small shops or markets.
  • Public transportation uses the OV-chipkaart, but you can also tap in with most credit and debit cards.
  • Taxis can be pricey, so trains, trams, and bikes are usually the best value.
